Tens physiological effects

The principle of brain stimulation is based on its potential effects on neuroplasticity and modulation of neural functions at the cortical level, either facilitating or inhibiting neuronal networks. Such plastic mechanisms include synaptogenesis and the generation of changes in affected neurons similar to those known as long-term potentiation and long-term depression observed in laboratory preparations [23]. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) are the two most widely used noninvasive brain stimulation strategies for the treatment of spinal cord injury.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) uses a rapidly changing magnetic field applied via coils on the outside of the skull to induce brief pulses of electrical current in the brain to trigger action potentials in cortical neurons, especially in the superficial parts of the cerebral cortex [24]. It is commonly used in many studies as an assessment measure to evaluate the excitability of the corticospinal tract in order to look for motor evoked potentials [25].

Burst TENS: It is used at low frequency with impulse trains (2-5Hz) with a basic frequency of 100 Hz and high amplitude, each impulse train lasting 70 milliseconds, and each burst consisting of 7 impulse trains. It is indicated for injuries that have been present for a longer period of time or are chronic. They do not produce an immediate analgesia but it is of longer duration.
